Gurdaas Maan is an Indian singer, songwriter, choreographer and
actor. He is regarded as one of the top most artist of Punjabi music. He
shot to fame with the chartbuster song 'Dil Da Mamla Hai' way back in
1980. Since then he has cut 27 albums and also penned over 200 songs.
Early Life
Gurdaas Maan was born on 4th January, 1957 in Giddarbaha, Muktsar
in Punjab, India in a Jatt Sikh family. His parents are Sardaar Gurdev
Singh Mann and Tej Kaur. After completing his formal education from
Malaut he was enrolled for higher education in Patiala by her parents.
Since he was a sports buff as well, it prompted him to get a degree in
physical education.
Later, he also took part in various activities like sports and
singing and won many awards. He is also a black belt in Judo Karate.
Professional Career
He composed a song called Dil Da Mamla Hai in 1980 and performed
it in a play. The play was seen by one of the officials of Doordarshan
Kendra, Jalandhar. He thought the song had the potential of being made
as a video and shown on national television to which Maan agreed. When
the song was aired on the national television on the New Year's Eve on
31st December, 1980, it attracted viewers from all over India. Soon,
Gurdaas Maan became a national icon.
The success of the song attracted HMV's attraction as it wanted
to release the song in an album. Gurdaas Maan finally released the album
in 1981 under the label of HMV. During his early days of career, Gurdaas Maan also scripted and
directed TV programs like POP Time for Doordarshan Kendra, New Delhi.
Gurdaas Maan is often credited for raising the bar of Punjabi
music from a regional platform to international arena. His album Apna
Punjab also won the Best Album Award in 1998 at the Asian Pop &
Media Awards held in Birmingham.

Awards and Recognition
Of many awards he has won, the most prestigious came on 7th September, 2010 when he was conferred an honorary degree of 'Doctor of Music' by the University of Wolver Hampton. As part of his UK TOUR, he would also be performing for 2 consecutive nights in April, 2011. He has also got the Jury Award from the President of India in 2005.
